How to prepare for your bathtub refinishing

All I ask is that if you are going to put new hardware on (faucets, knobs, etc.) PLEASE do so before having the refinishing completed. So many times I have went back because of an accident that occurs while putting on drains, faucets etc. I have never had a complaint that I can honestly remember of the surface coming up around existing fixtures. However in 2016 I had about 6 cases of damage caused by putting on new hardware after the refinishing. It is usually slipped pliers, a dropped wrench things like that and the damage was not bad at all it was more of a small chip or scratch that bothered the customer because of course they wanted it fixed. Please remember, this is not epoxy paint so it is etched into the old surface. I will mask off the fixtures and etch up to that fixture and warranty it.

Also to share my misfortune with you (maybe my expense can save you!) I refinished my (2) bathtubs at my house in 2004 I removed the drain out of my master tub, not putting much pressure on it honestly but I followed the directions on the drain removal tool (which went like this: place this tool in the drain and unscrew using a screwdriver as the leverage if more torque is needed) and when the drain came out it was attached to the plastic elbow that goes under the tub... SO... I had to pay $1500 to have a contractor take 3-4 rows of tile off my wall and jack my tub up just to replace the plastic elbow that cost .78 cents! If you have a problem drain consider doing what I did with my 2nd tub.. I purchased a watco glue down drain  I am not affiliated with them in any way but they have a great product that is simply a facing that comes in any finish you want, you can order with a stopper or without. It comes with an epoxy glue that you glue the new facing on to your old drain! Mine cost about $20.00 back then I don't know what they cost now but I promise after spending $1500.00 and having a contractor for 3 days in my home with dust and then re grouting the tile, the little silly things that we sometimes don't think about that comes with that experience like ... (dust... did I mention dust?... and loud equipment because (7) of the tile broke and guess what... the color could not be matched so... I had them put white replacement tile in then refinished the tile surround to a uniform color. I don't want to ever be a burden on my customers! I know I will loose some work to others that say no he did it wrong... we can replace it... but keep in mind I too have replaced drains since I started doing this in 1992 It did not happen to me until 2004 and I don't know how I could have "done it wrong" because it literally screws in and unscrews to come out. I am sure there are handy men out there that can replace them too... I personally would only allow a plumber to remove the drain and replace it. I hope my experience saves you money!! ..

I was 12 years old. My oldest brother made sure I was in church just about every Sunday. The building is still there but a different church occupies it now. I consider my self non denominational today but this particular church brought together people of every race! We had the most delicious country meals ever prepared by the ladies of the Church. Sunday, after church us kids would play and they would set up picnic tables. I can't help but smile when I Look back on those days that seem like a lifetime ago, yet are memories that I truly hope I will never, ever forget.

Preparing for  your bathtub, tile or shower for refinishing is a very easy process! In 99% of the time there is nothing to do before I arrive. If you want new hardware or drains, please have those installed before I arrive. I will mask off the drain and hardware then chemically bond the new surface up to it and guarantee it not to pull away! We have all heard the saying "if you want something right you have to do it yourself" well, that is how I feel about going into my customers home! The truth is, bathtub, tile, shower, and vanity refinishing is not a quick and easy process. Everything from weather conditions to the dust conditions inside the home effect the finished product. That's not saying the weather has to be perfect, Just saying the technician needs to understand how the weather for that day will effect the coating so it can be properly mixed.

I know we all want the best price for what we get. Keep this in mind, when correctly completed a refinished surface should last just as long as a new porcelain bathtub. A new porcelain bathtub has a life expectancy of 20 years. Polyester used by Dallas bathtub refinishing has a life expectancy of 20+ years too! However, the sad part is standard epoxy paint is still being used by some refinishing companies and even though that is bathtub painting, they are calling it refinishing. Standard epoxy paint was never meant for bathtub refinishing. It is a very tough paint. However, the thing to remember here is paint. It is painted on top of the surface.

We also know that you’ll find a surprising amount of discussion and differing opinions about the type of coating to use, the length of time before use and what to clean the surface with. The reason for that is because so many professionals are using products that simply are not meant for refinishing. I have seen everything from car paint, Epoxy, Lacquer even wall paint and Kilz sealant used on bathtubs and tile. Please understand If you hire the right professional you are going to increase the value of your home but you have to use a knowledgeable professional that uses synthetic porcelain and please resist any urge to cut corners based on a friend — or stranger’s — advice.

As a consumer I completely understand how bathtub refinishing may be something that you have not really heard of or may know very little about. I always try to put myself in my customers shoes. As an owner / Operated business it becomes very important to stay in the local area that I live in. I live in Rockwall and my wife and I actually just moved to Mesquite over by Lowes off Galloway and Hwy. 30. My father is 85 and mom and Dad live in old Mesquite so we are only about 6 minutes away from them in case they need anything. You know Important things like... The yard mowed, A Hamburger, or maybe the conversation about how the same squirrel eats the bird seed every morning between 7 and 8 AM!
 It reminds me of when I was a kid, playing in the back yard. I would hear my name and I knew better then to say "What?" because that reply always got the reply of "if I wouldn't have wanted you I wouldn't have called you" LOL! So I would run in only to change the channel on the big Zennith T.V. Dad had in the Living Room! I was so excited when we got our first remote control!!  That's o.k. though because I know I am blessed to have mom and Dad around in their 80's and I would not have it any other way!

Bathtub refinishing is a lot more then painting a bathtub, tile, shower or vanity with epoxy paint. Bathtub Refinishing also called bathtub resurfacing is the process of penetrating the old surface and chemically welding a new surface into the old. This is completed through the use of specialized chemicals and tools. Never should true bathtub refinishing involve epoxy paint.
As you can see in the picture below, the surface is first etched then coated with 5- 7 layers of fluoropolymer bonded with silane coupling agent. This gives a very tough surface that will last upwards of 20 years if properly taken care of. Dallas Bathtub Services
