I use a mechanical tool to skim the top glaze layer off the old surface. This works on Cultured Marble, Porcelain, Cast Iron, Fiberglass, Plastic, Formica and any other surface in the home!
I then use a crosslink molecular bonding agent that is hand rubbed and worked into the pores opened up through the etching process. The end result is with synthetic porcelain with liquid glass and fiberglass resin additive you get a GREAT, new looking surface that is impossible to peel because it is integrated into, not painted on top of the old surface. I am so fortunate. Seriously blessed to work for the people that I work for! I was called out to Mesquite,Tx. today and met a very nice couple that had moved here from Chicago. They needed a standard porcelain bathtub refinished, a Fiberglass jetted bathtub refinished and two cultured marble vanities. I was thinking how other refinishers that use a one coating fits all application could have been there half the time I was but with the fusion finish spray I had to mix each batch unique to the surface it was being applied to. However, the end result was very much worth it! Knowing that I did the absolute best job I could do for them and knowing that the surfaces are going to last many years is a great feeling that I would never experience If I were not using the fusion finish spray.
I posted the before and after pictures below. I know the saying a picture is worth a thousand words. However, the pictures in my line of work really is only worth two words. Before and After (LOL) I mean, honestly that really does sum up each refinishing project I do in the Dallas area. So much more goes into those pictures though. When I look at them I can remember the hard work that went into them but more importantly I can remember the companionship and conversations that took place during those jobs. I have had 2 different people in the last week contact me about wanting to use the bathtub epoxy sold at home improvement stores. They bought the epoxy but wanted to hire me to just put it on. I explained the epoxy is yellow (even tho it claims to be white). The epoxy will turn a very dingy yellow once bleach is used on it, It takes 3 days for it to dry... meaning any loose hair and dust will stick to the surface during those three days and goes on dull and painted looking. I really cannot believe they are still selling this product when it is the black cloud over the refinishing industry.
Please understand the reason behind this. Bathtub Refinishing is the process on fusing a new synthetic porcelain surface into, not on top of the old surface. Anytime a surface is simply painted over the paint will peel off. Especially when you factor in the gases that are released during the curing process.
