Old 1940's Cast Iron Bathtub Refinishing Today — Dallas Bathtub Refinishing
Today I refinished an old 1940’s cast iron bathtub in Dallas, TX, about ten minutes from my home off Loop 12. I even spent extra time restoring the built-in soap dish so it would match the bathtub, commode, and sink basins.
The tub had been coated years ago with boat epoxy and even had a layer of glue under the epoxy. That’s the kind of system that makes bathtub refinishing smell terrible for days and forces people to air the bathroom out for 2–3 days just to be tolerable. Most of that work was done in vacant houses because of the harsh fumes.
I carefully stripped and sanded the old coatings back, then etched the original porcelain so my new porcelain glaze bonds into the old surface instead of just sitting on top of it. From there, I used my silane-based bonding system and Factory white porcelain glaze to tie everything together.
Silane coupling agent is the same type of chemistry dentists use to bond to porcelain teeth and what’s used under coatings in the aerospace industry. Silane is activated by moisture, and once it’s activated it effectively “ratchets” the top coating down tighter the more it’s used. That’s what allows me to chemically weld the new surface into the old porcelain, not just paint over it.
After chemically welding the new surface, I build an 8–9 mil thick porcelain glaze surface. Once that cures, I use the silane coupling agent again and apply another 3–4 mil thick porcelain glaze. The end result is a finish comparable to the best baked-on powder coatings, but done right in your home with today’s safe, low-V.O.C. technology.
On this job I also repaired a broken overflow at no charge. The original bolts had snapped off in the holes, but I was able to get new overflow bolts to feed into the original screw holes and used a light adhesive to secure them back in place. Just a small way to take care of a very kind couple I truly enjoyed talking with and working for.
This refinishing comes with a transferable limited warranty and is designed for long-term performance, not quick apartment-grade paint jobs.
