Q.) Do you remove the drain or replace hardware?
I need a drain installed to prep the surface. I do not remove drains or change hardware because it creates a liability for leakage and damage. Removal is unnecessary—my coating chemically bonds into the old surface and bonds tight to the existing drain.
The drain, overflow, and hardware are masked. The new glaze bonds right up to them and you will not see a transition line. If installing a new drain, please do so BEFORE my arrival. A plumber may need heat to loosen corrosion.
I strongly recommend the Watco glue-down drain. It installs in 30 seconds, costs about $30, and avoids breaking old pipes. If you have one on hand, I will install it free after refinishing.
I’ve never had a surface come up around a drain in 30+ years, but I have seen customers chip and destroy new finishes trying to change drains afterwards—sometimes requiring a full redo.
If someone removes the drain after I arrive and the job must be canceled, there is a $280 trip charge because I work by appointment only.
Example: Day before Thanksgiving 2022 a shutoff valve broke while removing a faucet. It flooded the bathroom, ruined my equipment, and destroyed the surface. Their emergency plumber bill was $1,000. I didn’t charge a trip fee—but any other contractor would have.
Q.) What will the homeowner need to do to prepare?
Very little in most cases. Please give me a clean workspace and remove all bottles and items from around the area. Clean the tub/tile surface as well as you can.
I recommend cleaning the bathroom as if you were showing the house. Overspray is not a problem—I use only 2–3 pounds of air pressure. But sanding dust can occur, especially with acrylic, fiberglass, and cultured marble.
If water is leaking behind tile or under the door rails, allow it to dry 100% before scheduling. Water drips can erode the new surface.
Avoid pet hair in the bathroom—two cases in 30 years caused embedded hair. Dust, grout crumbs, and loose debris should be vacuumed.
Please ensure there are no dripping faucets. Steady drips can eventually erode the new finish.
If doing hardware or tile work, finish it before refinishing. The drain must be installed at the time of refinishing.
I recommend the Watco glue-down drain for safe, simple replacements.

Q.) How long after refinishing until a door assembly can be installed?
The surface is ready for normal use after 24 hours. For glass doors or frames, wait 48 hours to give additional bonding time.
Refinished surfaces return to service in just 24 hours!
Q.) Will there be a lot of dust?
Very little. HVLP spraying eliminates almost all airborne dust. Larger showers or multiple surfaces may have some dry sanding dust, but it is minimal and never a complaint in 30+ years.
The HVLP turbine heats the air, removing moisture, and the coating chemically bonds into the old surface using a premium silane coupling agent.
Q.) Can other work be done while you are refinishing?
I do not recommend it. We want a clean, low-dust environment before and for 12 hours after refinishing.
Q.) Can a surface be refinished more than once?
Absolutely. I have refinished tubs, tile, and showers that were refinished 3–4 times over the years. Just text me a picture for an exact quote.
Q.) Why are there so many prices when it comes to refinishing?
Because most professionals use low-cost epoxy, urethane, or alkyd paints that are only water-resistant—not water-PROOF. These coatings fail quickly.
Correct refinishing requires:
- Proper etching
- High-quality silane bonding (used in dentistry & aerospace)
- 100% polyester topcoats (waterproof, not resistant)
- Multiple layers with bonding between coats
Silane is expensive and never diluted. Moisture activates it, creating a chemical weld between surfaces. This prevents peeling and mildew formation.
My refinished surfaces are rated for underwater submersion and last 20+ years when cared for properly.
Q.) How are your products different from other refinishers?
Most refinishers use acrylic urethane paint. Many failed jobs I see used epoxy, lacquer, kilz, krylon, or even wall paint.
I use:
- 100% polyester coatings
- High-quality silane bonding agents
- Strict prep and sanding procedures
- Multiple bonded coats for proper film thickness
I do every job myself, ensuring every step is completed correctly.
Q.) Why can't I paint my tub with a D.I.Y. kit?
Because DIY kits use cheap alkyd/epoxy/urethane paints that are not waterproof. They peel, bubble, lift, and clog drains.
When DIY coatings wrinkle under new professional coatings, the entire tub must be stripped and sanded again.
If refinishing is not in your budget, lightly wet-sanding with 400-grit and using CLR can improve appearance temporarily—but it is not a fix.
Q.) Should I be gone during the refinishing process?
My coatings are low VOC. Odor dissipates within about 1 hour after completion. Once cured, polyester coatings do not release harmful vapors.
I use carbon air filtration and personally have asthma—no issues since 2003. However, if you are pregnant or have respiratory concerns, you may prefer stepping out during work.
Q.) How much deposit is required upfront?
None! I never ask for money upfront.
If I arrive and the job cannot be completed due to leaks, missing hardware, other workers present, or cancellations, there is a $280 trip charge.
This very rarely happens, but occurred three times in two weeks in 2023 — so I now explain it upfront.
Q.) Is any other color besides white available?
Yes. Any non-white color is an additional $50 from my supplier and can be chosen from any Sherwin-Williams color card.
If tile and tub are different colors, it adds an $80 trip charge and one extra day for proper curing/masking.
Q.) How many workers will be in my home?
Just me! I work alone — no subcontractors, no day labor. You get my 30+ years of experience on every job.
I started this business in high school in 1991, went full-time in 1992, and have been serving Dallas ever since.
Q.) Do you accept credit cards?
Absolutely — cards, checks: Please make payable to: Johnny Yarbrough, Venmo, Zelle, and cash. No processing fees. Payment is due upon completion.
Q.) Can I text a picture of the project to get a quote?
Absolutely! Text me a picture and I will give you an exact quote. I never spam, follow up endlessly, or add you to any mailing list.
972-391-7994 — Text me anytime.
Q.) Is there any other information I should know?
Only that I sincerely appreciate nice people. I want you to love your new surface and feel fully appreciated.
I always arrive on time (usually 20 minutes early), never rush, and never overbook. I wear a respirator and gloves, so text/email works best for communication during work.
You will always know your exact price upfront — I have never charged more than my quoted price.
