Owner-Operated Bathtub Rust Restoration & Permanent Porcelain Glaze (Dallas TX)
Owner-Operated Bathtub Rust Restoration in Dallas, TX
This stamped steel bathtub in Dallas, TX had rusted due to a small divot formed over many years. Stamped steel tubs are similar to cast iron bathtubs, but because they do not have the same weight and structural strength, they can flex just enough for standing water to repeatedly settle near the drain. Over time, this wears down the factory porcelain glaze and exposes the lead-binder layer, which then rusts exactly like the video shows.
Why the Rust Happened in the First Place
This rust could have started years ago. Repeatedly standing in water pushes weight forward to the drain area, creating a depression that traps water. As the original glaze wears down, stronger acidic and abrasive cleaners are used to “clean” what looks like dirt — but these products actually scratch and remove even more porcelain, accelerating the rust and discoloration.
Step One: Rebuild the Damaged Area
Before any coating can be applied, the worn and damaged area must be properly rebuilt. I used a high-strength repair system to level the divot so the new finish could bond smoothly and evenly. Without this step, any coating would fail and allow rust to return beneath the surface.
Step Two: Remove Moisture and Reverse the Rust
Rust cannot simply be painted over. The area must be dried, stabilized, and sealed. Using Moisture Scavenger, I drew out the trapped moisture from the rust and surrounding porcelain. Once the moisture was removed, the rust could be properly reversed and prepared for a permanent glaze.
Step Three: Fusion Lock™ and Permanent Porcelain Glaze
With the rust reversed and the surface stabilized, I applied my proprietary Fusion Lock™ bonding system. Fusion Lock™ contains four blends of silane that activate with moisture, creating a chemical weld between the old surface and the new coating.
Instead of simply painting over the rust, I integrated a glossy white permanent porcelain glaze directly into the old surface — the correct way to fix a rusty bathtub. This guarantees long-term durability and prevents rust from forming underneath the new finish.
Why Owner-Operated Refinishing Matters
I have personally refinished bathtubs in the Dallas area since 1992, after graduating Mesquite High School. Being owner-operated means I complete every job myself — no subcontractors, no shortcuts, and no apartment-grade “paint and go” products. Every bathtub gets professional-level prep, proper rust repair, and a permanent glaze designed to last for decades.
