Bathtub refinishing is not a new concept and in fact has been around since the 1960's. Back then Bathtub refinishing A.K.A. bathtub refinishing or bathtub reglazing was completed using epoxy paint. The issue with using epoxy paint is it had a dull appearance, will yellow when bleach is used and since it is a paint, It is actually a paint so it will go on top of the old surface.
The option I started using in 2007 was a product called fluoropolymer. The process involves a non acid etching of the old surface, a chemical cleaning agent, a molecular bonding agent that is hand rubbed into the microscopic scratches created through etching. It will then have (7) coats or layers of fluoropolymer applied using a  system called an H.V.L.P. sprayer. This is a fine finish applicator that uses only (2) pounds of air pressure to gently lay the coatings down without blemishes. The refinished surface is ready for use the following day in most cases.
The savings that are realized over bathtub replacement is about 80% versus replacement. The cost of replacing a bathtub does not come from the cost of the bathtub itself. The bathtub has a lip on it that goes under the tile. So to replace a bathtub will mean removal or breakage of usually 2 rows of tile. Finding the color of replacement tile is usually not an easy task. Then please keep in mind the bathtub is installed before the finish carpentry is completed. So to get the old tub out of the door or down the hall and a new tub in may require widening doors. It is not unusual for a bathtub replacement to cost $3000 and up. Depending on the job. Refinishing the old bathtub is a very cost efficient way to make your bathtub and or tile look new again!
