Bathtub refinishing also called resurfacing is the process of restoring a bathtub, shower or tile back to a like new condition for a fraction of the cost of replacement.

First a chemical cleaner will be used to remove any residue that can effect your new finish. Etching is then accomplished using a spun fiber disk that rotates at over 2600 RPM's. This is a crucial step neglected by other refinishers. I then use the chemical cleaner again to make absolutely sure the surface is free of any oils and residue. Even oils from your hand will negatively effect the new surface. Next is a molecular bonding agent hand rubbed into the pores created through the etching process. This bonding agent is a 2 part silane developed by the aerospace industry for high altitude aircraft. It works by using the condensation that occurs through the use of hot water. The condensation acts as a catalyst causing a chemical weld between the original surface and the new surface. The finish coat is a copolymer coating infused with polyester and silicone resin. This is an ultra hard coating designed for the bathtub, shower and tile refinishing industry. The life expectancy is 20 plus years and it includes an 8 year written, transferable warranty.

Today was another bathtub that had been refinished with Aliphatic Acrylic Urethane. This is not a guess but a fact. Super nice guy that painted the tub he simply thought painting a bathtub was all there was to doing this project. This bathtub Lasted 5 months before he called but he said in all honesty it began to bubble after 3 months of being used 3 times a week for showers. Fluoropolymer coating is crosslinked and infused with silicone and polyester resin. Did you know the P.B.R.A. does not endorse using epoxy paint and Acrylic Urethane paint on bathtubs? Yet more times than not that is exactly what you are going to pay your hard earned money for. For starters I use Fluoropolymer coatings etched into the old surface and chemically welded to the old surface with silane. Have you ever heard of silane? Well, it was developed by the aerospace industry to make sure the paint bonded to high altitude planes and space equipment. Moisture will catalyze saline so it becomes even stronger after use when the surface is subjected to temperature changes and condensation forms.
It's an easy step to leave out because it is never seen... unless it's not used, then it will surely be seen as you have a peeling mess going down your bathtub!
Silane is available in hundreds of different types or strengths. Some of the weaker ones are found in primer paints because it helps to seal water stains and promotes bonding. High quality Silane are hundreds of dollars per gallon! However when used and combined with the etching process you get a surface that is not only integrated into the old surface but chemically welded into the old surface. Also going back to the Fluoropolymer coating it's not paint. It would be a fair statement According to the P.B.R.A (Professional Bathtub Refinishing Association) to say the bathtub is getting a spray in tub liner since the fluoropolymer is closer to plastic than anything else. The end result is a non toxic, gorgeous surface that looks and feels like porcelain and is expected to last over 20 years with everyday use!
